REVIEW: The Mermaids – Love From The Vegetable Kingdom

There's a new Australian website called Crawlspace dedicated to "mostly about strange / weird / beautiful / repugnant Australian music." There's a section called Scum Mecca with reviews in it. Here is one of them.

Mermaids – Love From The Vegetable Kingdom CS (Grog Pappy)

New tape on what is easily one of the best tape labels in the cuntry. One part Cock Safari, other part Polyfox, Mermaids is a project usually reserved for cheap laughs and cheaper sounds emitted via a range of toys and abused Nintendo applications. Love From The Vegetable Kingdom sees the Mermaids paired up with Nylstoch (Unaustralians, Venting Gallery) on a rare Melbourne sojourn earlier in the year. Although elements of their toys creep underneath at times (definitely could pick an annoying siren I’ve heard used at least once before), Nylstoch’s hysterical overdriven geet and presumed later drumming mutates the Mermaids into a much more threatening beast. The animal lurches, stumbles and crashes into a heap of low-end blow-out and cymbal collapse. Grog Pappy provides what is probably the greatest insight into Newcastle you are likely to get, outside of getting your head kicked in outside The Kent. This tape’s covers are printed on paper found in one of the many derelict buildings in the Newcastle “CBD” (I use the term very loosely) before it was demolished. My copy has a list of many of Newcastle’s suburbs in its background, and I probably have a fucked story associated with every one of them. There is no love in this vegetable patch.

VAGRANT #5 – Scattered Order, Dracopede, The Mermaids

with

SCATTERED ORDER
DRACOPEDE
THE MERMAIDS

SATURDAY 15TH JULY 2012
The Terrace Bar, 529 Hunter St, Newcastle
Free Entry, Bands from 8pm

Scattered Order finally, ultimately bring the 3 headed noise monster back to Newcastle.
Confounding listeners for decades with their genre bending approach to sound, Scattered Order are currently in full flight after a massive re-energising. The band that founded the legendary Australian post punk M Squared label has been exhilarating audiences over the last two years with their totally unique approach to noise and tune.
Their multi-layered, sometimes abrasive, sometimes blissful sound is aimed at producing a third entity from the combination of noise with melody, adding seductive beats and eccentric processing.
Scattered Order will perform under the writhing light of live video projections by Living Science Dept.

The Melbournites are also playing the night before in Newcastle at The Pharmacy.

COCK SAFARI & DINGBATS a cat may look at a king

From Altered States blog:

"This here’s a fried lil’ collab between Cock Safari and Dingbats recorded at Newcastle’s premier pharmaceutical dispensary / venue / flophouse. There isn’t much point trying to describe these sounds, ya just need to chuck your green goggles on and immerse yourself. One thing I will say is that if you dig on loops, this is the crepe for you. I had a bunch of c90’s lying around, so half the tape is taken up with whatever crap was on the end of the master I was given, sounds like local radio, whoo. 40 copies."
Many copies have different titles on them; "a cock may look like a king", "a cat may look at a cock", "a cat may look like a king", etc.

Originally released in edition of two on Grog Pappy in November 2011.

EX-CROWN “646 592 3423” c10

First release on the WHITENESS & PINKNESS label from Melbourne! Ex-Crown “646 592 3423” c10 cassette! Ex-Crown is the conceptual audio project of Miles Pflanz, who used to be in a dadaist noise troupe called Crown Now when he was a teenager and does video now. On this debut cassette, there are selections of some sounds he encountered when calling as many payphones in Manhattan as he could in an 8 hour period. On the flip, there is a stand-off with automated voice technology that develops into a frustrated opus. Together the pieces create a brief, noir-ish, and lonesome comedy that make for one hell of a business card.

highly recommended!!!!

EAST LINK debut cassette

First tape on a new label called CREEP DREAMS and also the first release so far by Melbourne's East Link. EL deliver a blown-out, three gtr assault that combines equal parts riff-fueled rock and noise-fucked psych.
If it makes the band of any more interest to you (and I know it does), East Link features members of such notable Asstralian flag-bearers as Total Control, UV Race, Repairs, Lakes, Straightjacket Nation, Interzone, Teargas, etc. Really, they are just a fk'n great band and one of the best currently doing the rounds here.
