If you were hoping to maintain the (rather fun) notion that Newcastle bands exist in their own gloriously weird vacuum, then just ignore the awkwardly iconoclastic name of this release and feast your eyes on the contributors: Stitched Vision, Reunion Sacred Ibis, Cock Safari, Alzheimer Blanks etc etc. If this amounts to a scene, then none of them are talking (though in reality, they mostly do) but they're feeling roughly the same thing. Newcastle groups excel at the kind of doggedly-unpretentious but unwittingly affecting sounds that makes otherwise unpalatable music transiently fascinating to the dilettante, and totally transcendent to the well-versed. Are they all just rubbing off on one another? Are all the lesser known names here (World of Trouble, Shitxsfmcrudd) only good because they adopt, via some sonic osmosis, the charisma of their better known brethren? The truth is blurry. What you have here is music so heavily entrenched in a post-post-millenial dread, a sense of humoured uselessness and despair, a sense of deep and honest disenfranchisement, that it transcends the horrid “talentless-hacks-with-effects-pedals” image that noise has duly adopted since it's brief fling with a more mainstream audience back in the mid-'00s. No one (generally speaking) is ever going to give more than two shits about noise music, but if for some reason they did, this compilation is world class. Snap this up immediately for a drab evaluation of this epoch.

Review from Negative Guest List zine: Grog Pappy is a small-run tape label outta Newcastle . So far it has served to release tapes by some of the dozen or so groups that the guy who runs it is involved in (Cock Safari, Rotted Crow, Brassskulls among ‘em). Mermaids is a more recent venture featuring Mycle Leechskins and Polyfox French. The “piece” here, “Mermaids Play Guitars” is just that, the two knuckleheads bashing away at heavily-processed stringed apparatuses. The “playing” part is debatable though. One of the dueling geets sounds like a low-end plane crash, the other a collapsing pile of junk. The scope of sounds they get outta their instruments is applaudable. Mermaids make something that sounds at home in the Providence, RI noise spectrum (Weasel Walter, Landed, et al) or, more appropriately, it sounds like it’s from Newcastle.
Cock Driller is self-described as “Drillbit riding Cock Safari” if you are familiar with one or both of these freaks (you should be), you’ll begin to understand what this entails. The Cock Driller side is their set first live set, recorded at Sedition in Sydney. They combine abused tapes and demented electronics in one of the best cacophonies of shit I’ve heard lately. Some it had me wondering if the cassette was actually being chewed in the deck, it’s that fucked. The best thing about this track is the patience they employ, riding out all the good sounds for a fair amount of time. This tape rivals the ’97 premiership win as a historical highpoint for Newcastle

MSL is the new project from Mycle of Cock Safari, Anal Cum Wolf, Sunset Flips, etc. I would say this is him in more "serious" noise mode, but I'm not really sure he's capable of being serious. This goes for sixty minutes and not a millisecond too long.
Both are in an edition of 40 on recycled tapes.
